![]() 3D Tutorial for Editors: Confessions of a Two-Dimensional Man
Whatever else this little animation is, it probably is NOT the kind of animation you're used to creating in your NLE's title tool. Even for a 3D neophyte like me, this was altogether painless to create, and very quickly yielded satisfying results. [an error occurred while processing this directive] Along the way, I tried to show how easy it is to customize any of the elements I used to build this animation, but there's also an easy way to save anything I create to use later. It's the Style Palette, which you can open from the Windows menu, or by pressing control-7 on Windows, command-7 on Macintosh. In addition to the obvious use of preserving styled text, the Boris Style Palette can preserve nearly anything I choose: colors, gradients, customized natural media or materials to be applied to extruded objects. I can even save sets of extrusion parameters, so that I can apply favorite combinations of extrusion depth, bevel type and smoothness without having to set all those parameters each time. As befits a tour of a three-dimensional world by a two-dimensional man, I've only touched a small handful of RED's tools for 3D creation and animation. You can extrude and animate the bezier control points of imported EPS and Illustrator files, extrude and animate custom vector objects created in RED, have extruded objects interact and intersect, and much more. You want 3D vector text on a path, passing through an extruded Illustrator logo? A piece of cake. There's more to RED than 3D, like vector paint, motion tracking, particle systems, keying, and 2D titling. But the 3D tools in Boris RED are particularly compelling, because they're accessible to video editors, without sacrificing the graphics and animation power that you and your clients demand, and without having to leave your NLE.
