NAB Diary: Super Tuesday
Today should be retitled Wow-day in honor of the magnificent things I saw today on the trade-show floor.
First, I forgot to mention one of my meetings yesterday with Artbeats. If you do any editing or post production, you are probably familiar with the great collection of stock footage available from the company. Just prior to NAB, Artbeats released close to 30 new titles in a variety of categories. As always, very cool stuff from them. Probably the most popular collection going right now is the Lifestyles collection that features people doing normal everyday things. I had a really great informal chat with Phil Bates, President of Artbeats, in which we talked about how some of the collections come about. I’ll try to follow up with him later on for a one on one interview that you can read right here.[an error occurred while processing this directive]My first meeting on Super Tuesday was with Ultimatte. At the show they introduced the new hardware keyer Ultimatte 10 based on the AdvantEdge system. If you are a current Ultimatte 9 user, there is a good upgrade path option because the 9 series can be easily converted to 10. If you are an older user of Ultimatte hardware, you are going to have a tougher time, but they can work with you.
The wow product from Ultimatte was actually a product they were not even unveiling at the show, instead they were showing the product but not telling anyone what it was. Do you see anything strange in the picture below? The projected image is front projected with the host standing in front of the screen. There is no flash photography in the shot.

See, the projector is not casting a projected image on the host! Using “black box” technology, the I-matte system is actually doing a real time mask to keep the host from looking odd with a projected image. What’s more, with the remote control, you can actually push a button and move the cursor (or other elements on the screen) simply by moving your hand. Another push of a button will allow you to draw directly on the screen. How cool is that?
Ultimatte will officially unveil this technology at INFOCOM later in the year. They did not have any pricing available at this time.
