DMN Interview: Premiere Pro Premieres (Parts 1, 2 and 3 combined)

DMN: How much does Premiere cost and when can people buy it?

Townhill: Thirty to forty-five days from now, people should be able to go out and buy it. In fact, it's worth noting that as of now, they can go to Adobe.com and place orders for it. The price is $699 for a new user, so if somebody has never had a previous copy of Premiere, they can buy it for $699. If they are an existing Premiere user, they can upgrade for $199 -- that's any version on any platform, so if you're using Premiere 4.2 and you haven't decided to upgrade yet, you can upgrade for $199. If you're on the Mac, and decide that you want to take advantage of the power of Premiere Pro, you're welcome -- just go to Adobe.com/switch [smiles].

DMN: [Laughs] Do you actually have…

Townhill: No, no, no, I'm just kidding. If you are a Mac Premiere user, and you want to stay with Premiere, you can upgrade for $199, there's no penalty for coming from the Mac platform.

DMN: There are bundles, too.

Townhill: I was just going to mention that. Adobe Premiere Pro forms part of the Digital Video Collection. I beg your pardon, it's actually just the Video Collection now. The "Digital" is assumed, nowadays, right?

DMN: Of course. Right.

Townhill: It forms part of a four-product suite inside the Video Collection, which is Premiere Pro, Encore, Audition and After Effects Standard Edition. Actually that's going out at a special price, which is $799 -- I believe that's for 60 days and it's $999 after that. So you can buy a full copy of Premiere and you get everything else for a hundred bucks. So it's a hard deal to pass up. Let's put it this way, even if you're upgrading from Premiere, so let's you you're going to spend the $200 on the upgrade, you get Encore for $549, you get After Effects for $699 and you get Audition for $299. It's still a good deal, no matter how you look at it. Even if you're a Premiere upgrade customer, say you don't want to buy the full version of Premiere -- for $799 it's still a steal.

DMN: And there's a higher-end bundle.

Townhill: There is a higher-end bundle. There's the professional edition of that video collection. It's called the Video Collection Professional Edition. That's $1499. That's Premiere Pro, Encore, Audition, After Effects Production Bundle, and Photoshop.

DMN: So it's time to celebrate as soon as it ships out the door.

Townhill: I've been looking at the coverage. What's most important to me is the response we've been getting on some of the [Web-based] forums. Some of our beta testers have been given permission to post some feedback on those forums. Lots of existing users are asking them questions, and the really cool thing about it is that the answer to almost every single one of them is "yes." Does it do this? Does it do this? Does it so this? Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. And so, my ego has been very well massaged right now -- two and a half years of development work, and now it's beginning to pay off.

DMN: It's kind of a thankless job when everything is so secret. But now you're out in the open.

Townhill: Well if you think back -- two and a half years ago is when we started. But we released Premiere 6.5 right in the middle of that. Actually the most painful experience I ever had to go on was the Premiere 6.5 press tour. I was very proud of Premiere 6.5, but almost every press discussion that we had, somebody would say, "What about color correction? What about multiple timelines?"

DMN: And you just wanted to say, "We have it."

Townhill: I was so desperate to say, "Just watch this space."

DMN: You couldn't give it away.

Townhill: We couldn't give it away. We've been developing this for a long time, and it's very nice to see the fruits of our labor.
