Sony PremierPro 23" LCD Display

Side view of the Sony PremierPro
Here's a side view of the Sony PremierPro. Notice how you can remove the monitor's back and pedestal, and then hang it on a wall. Also look at how far forward the monitor is tilted, something you can't do with the Apple HD Cinema display.
In our test configuration, we connected the monitor to an NVidia Quadra FX 1000 card, which is dual display-capable. In the other DVI leg we attached another Sony flat panel, that 18" one running at a 1280x1024 resolution. What a canvas! The smaller monitor worked well for bins and palettes, the huge PremierPro handled the timeline and project window in a few different editing and content creation applications we tested. It was the best setup we've seen yet. I suppose the only way to improve on it would be to employ two of these 23" monitors.

Since the Apple and Sony 23" displays are of the same quality, what's left to help you decide which one to use? If you're a Mac user and you don't want to mount your monitor on the wall or don't need to tilt it forward or backward, it's a toss-up. Pick the one you think looks the best, because you can find this Sony monitor for roughly the same price as the Cinema display -- around $2000. If you're a PC user, the same factor of tilting and wall-mounting comes into play, but then there's that issue of the non-adjustable brightness, contrast, color and gamma controls. For some, that will be a deal-killer. And, I wouldn't hold out much hope that Apple will develop Windows software so PC users can properly set up their Apple monitors. What do I think? My taste leans significantly toward the Apple monitor in the appearance department, but my practical side leans toward the more-configurable and tilt-able Sony. Overall, I'd have to give the nod to Sony. I am so taken with both these monitors, though, I'd like to have one of each. Just like my assessment of the Apple HD Cinema display, I highly recommend this 23" Sony PremierPro display. It doesn't get any better than this. Strong buy.
