Fly Through
While using Track Mattes for the opening is nice, what is requested more often is the fly-through to reveal effect. This can also be done with Track Mattes, but in a slightly different way.[an error occurred while processing this directive]Step 1: Create your location text as previously outlined; however leave the last letter off.

Step 2: Place the last letter on a separate layer.

Step 3: Create and animate your cursor layer as previously outlined. Make sure you set the Transfer Mode to Exclusion.

Step 4: When you get to the point in your Timeline where the last letter appears, split the layer (Edit>Split Layer). For clarification, change the name of the newly created layer to Last Letter Cursor. Change the Transfer Mode back to Normal.

Step 5: Import your location video clip into the Timeline. It should begin at the point where the last letter appears.

Make sure your layers are arranged in the following order (top to bottom):
1. Last Letter layer
2. Location Video layer
3. Last Letter Cursor layer (Transfer Mode Normal)
4. White Solid layer (original cursor layer – Transfer Mode Exclusion)
5. First portion of text layer

Now change the Track Matte for the Location layer to Luma Matte “last letter”.

You should see your location appear inside the last letter only.

Step 5: Now to create the fly through effect, we need to do some parenting. Add a Null Object to the composition (Layer>New>Null Object). You can place this at the bottom of the Timeline stack. Rename the Null Object to Zoom Null.

Step 6: Parent all of the text and cursor layers to the Zoom Null. Do not parent the Location layer to the Null.

Step 7: Now animate the Scale and Position of the Zoom Null to taste. Because the text and cursor elements are parented to the Zoom Null, they too will scale and change position for the final effect. In order to keep the text sharp, turn on Continuous Rasterization for the text layers.

And there you have it – Track Mattes can be used when complex masks or mattes are needed.

Until the next installment, practice the fly through effect with different letters in the location name.
