Juggling Fire
Working with Particleillusion 3.0 and After Effects

Earlier in the week I reviewed Particleillusion 3.0, and marveled at how easy it is to use. In this exercise, I’ll walk you through the process of using Particleillusion with Adobe After Effects 6.0.

As previously mentioned, Particleillusion 3.0 is a stand alone application that is used to create some amazing particle effects. Even though it is a stand alone app, it still has the ability to use data from other applications like Aura, Maya, and After Effects. While the integration could be better, you can make it work. For this exercise, we’ll use some motion tracking data from After Effects, and place some flickering balls of light in the talents hand.[an error occurred while processing this directive]Step 1: Begin by capturing your footage. Yours truly decided he would dust off his juggling skills and step in front of the camera for you.

Step 2: Digitize your footage using your favorite NLE program. Currently Particleillusion runs only on the PC with the Mac version expected sometime in the near future. That being said, the Final Cut Pro format is QuickTime, which can be read on any system.

Step 3: Import your footage into After Effects 6.0. Create a new composition, and place the clip in the Timeline.

Step 4: Create a new solid that will act as a placeholder for the tracking data to the composition.

Step 5: With the video clip selected, Right+Click on the layer and select Track Motion from the Pop Up menu.
