LAS VEGAS (Jan. 09, 2004) -- ADS Tech announced the PYRO 1394b Drive Kit with support for the 800Mbps 1394b bus-the industry's fastest peripheral bus. With ADS Tech's new PYRO 1394b Drive Kit, adding a broad range of storage devices to any PC, Mac or network server equipped with a 1394b FireWire port has never been faster or easier. Connected drives are instantly converted to hot-pluggable devices that deliver data at their maximum throughput.

The PYRO 1394b Drive Kit is an external, stackable storage device that can be used with almost any IDE Hard Drive, ATA-100 Drive, CD, DVD or DVD-RAM drive.

Offering twice the speed of 1394a devices, the PYRO 1394b Drive Kit is ideal for high-speed storage and backups as well as audio and video applications where dropped or out of order frames are unacceptable. Fully backward compatible to 1394a, FireWire connectivity also ensures convenience. When connecting or disconnecting the Drive Kit, users don't have to shut down their computer and wait while it re-boots. With this capability, Drive Kit users can quickly share data by plugging the drive kit into the FireWire Port of a co-worker's computer.

"Our new PYRO 1394b Drive Kit was specifically designed to deliver speed and convenience," said Mike McCoy, president of ADS Technologies. "1394b technology supports data burst speeds of up to 800Mbps (100MB/sec); and we've achieved impressive sustained transfer rates of over 50MB/sec. with hard drives in our testing labs. Since Digital Video only requires 3.9 MB/sec., that leaves plenty of speed for other tasks."

To add Gigabytes of storage to a PC or Mac, users simply slide the drive into the Drive Kit enclosure, bolt it down to the enclosure with the included mounting screws, plug in the power, close the case and connect it to the system's 1394b card. The drive will be instantly recognized by the computer without having to configure the drive or add device Ids. ADS Tech also offers 1394b add-on cards for systems that do not have a 1394b bus.

The PYRO 1394b Drive Kit features two 1394b ports: one for connection to the host device and one to act as a daisy chain connection or FireWire repeater to extend the FireWire bus. One legacy 1394a connector is also included for systems that do not have a 1394b host. The Drive Kit enclosure includes a silent ball bearing fan to keep drives cool and ensure smooth, quiet operation for thousands of hours.

Pricing, Availability
Available through ADS Tech's network of online and retail channels worldwide, the PYRO 1394b Drive Kit has an ESP of US$119. The kit includes a PYRO 1394b drive kit enclosure; a removable bezel cover; a screw kit for installing a hard drive, CD drive or DVD drive; a 1394b cable and a flat ribbon cable (ATA-100); and an external power supply; as well as a CD with drivers and SpeedTools Utilities for Mac systems from INTECH Software.

The PYRO 1394b Drive Kit can be connected to 1394b/FireWire 800-enabled Windows 2000 and XP PCs and FireWire-enabled Mac OS X (10.2.6) or higher systems. The ADS Tech 1394b PCI Add-in card is available with an MSRP of US$99 for PCs that do not come with a 1394b card.
