MILPITAS, Calif. (Jan. 26, 2004) -- Candera, Inc. today announced that Oxygen Media -- a 24-hour cable television network with original series by Oprah Winfrey, Isaac Mizrahi and Carrie Fisher -- has chosen Candera's SCE 510 cluster to increase the capacity of its storage area network (SAN), and centralize data into one virtual pool for better management and ease of use.

Oxygen Media is combining the SCE 510 cluster with low-cost serial ATA technology, which will enable the company to cost-effectively expand and allocate storage without sacrificing performance or reliability. In a separate announcement issued today, Candera also said it would begin offering a new ATA appliance. The Candera ATA Appliance combines the SCE 510 network storage controller with serial ATA RAID drives, enabling customers to seamlessly deploy a new tier of low-cost storage into their networks.

"We needed to expand the storage capacity of our post-production editing system with minimal disruption to our existing SAN environment," said James Peebles, director of engineering technology for Oxygen Media. "We evaluated numerous storage solutions, but none offered the level of interoperability, ease of use and price performance of the SCE 510 network storage controller. Candera's solution enabled us to not only increase the capacity of our SAN, but also to better manage and pool our data, so that its use could be expanded throughout the company."

Oxygen Media has typically deployed independent ATA storage devices as a set of point solutions to satisfy its storage capacity and performance requirements. The ability to pair Candera's high performance and reliable network storage controller with existing and new ATA technology has enabled Oxygen Media to build a low-cost ATA-based storage infrastructure with the performance, high availability and reliability of conventional enterprise-class systems. Moreover, the centralized management and flexible provisioning features of Candera's SCE 510 cluster enable the creation of a single data pool that can be easily managed and scaled to meet the unpredictable, time-critical requirements of Oxygen Media's digital nonlinear editing environment.

"By deploying an SCE 510 cluster into their storage network, Oxygen Media has demonstrated that customers can now use ATA technology to bring a new tier of storage to their environment with the same high availability and performance they expect from enterprise-class systems," said Stephen Terlizzi, vice president of marketing and business development for Candera. "As a result, organizations that implement Candera's network storage controllers can dramatically reduce storage network complexity, improve their productivity, and significantly reduce cost. Our work with Oxygen Media is a classic example of the benefits that can be realized when deploying the SCE 510 cluster, and is a strong indication of our growing momentum in the competitive storage market."

Oxygen Media was also impressed by the SCE 510 cluster's ease of use. Because the network storage controller offers single-step storage provisioning, administrators have been able to quickly and easily create policies to allocate storage based on the diverse bandwidth and performance requirements of their users. With the emerging demand for high-definition television (HDTV), Oxygen Media needs to deliver high data rates for those involved in high-definition video editing while also delivering lower data rates for tasks such as graphics editing.

About the SCE 510 Cluster
Based on the patent-pending Candera U*Star architecture, the Candera SCE 510 cluster is purpose-built to enable data centers to centralize all of their islands of SAN storage into a single, heterogeneous SAN with one common management interface. This greatly simplifies management, lowers costs, improves service levels and enhances the productivity of data center storage administrators. The SCE 510 cluster is the first to bring full active-active high availability for continuous access to data; and full reliability, availability and serviceability (RAS) features to network-based storage management. The cluster also provides exceptional error tracing and handling in high load processing environments, and superior interoperability through intelligent object-based device characterization.

Candera provides its customers with world-class technical support through IBM Global Services, offering 24x7 customer service and help desk support. Customer service plans range from the standard factory warranty, up to a special platinum level service plan with two-hour onsite support in most major cities around the United States.
