Part 2: Pinnacle Liquid Edition's Color Correction Tool
Page 4 of 4

Okay, I do have a gripe with the CX and it may be my personal preference, but here it is anyway. While I can set any clip in my timeline as the reference clip, I would like the option of a three window setup where the middle window represents the clip I’m correcting and the previous and next windows correspond to the previous and next clips in the timeline. By having this, it would make color matching even easier and switching between the shots would be a single click. My other pet peeve is while Liquid Edition has grown beyond 1024x768 (now beautifully supports 1600x1200), the CX interface is still going back to when it first made its appearance with Liquid… This last one is minor as it doesn’t affect my ability to work, but hey – 1024x768 is so 2001!

But wait, there’s more!
To be honest, there’s so much that I felt could be written about in the CX tool – Hue Match, Histo Match – both with region selects, 3-point gray balance. I just scratched the surface of the selective color corrector tool. I’ve continued to discover new things about this tool – and that’s saying a lot when you use NLEs all the time.

Outside of my complaint on how Liquid Edition approaches shot-to-shot color correction, I have very little to complain about with the CX Tool. The basics are there with simple primary color correction, quick color match, waveform/vectorscope, and 3-point gray balance. But it’s the two secondary color correction tools that make Liquid Edition so powerful for serious color correction in a DV-based nonlinear editor. In this day and age, many NLEs have good color tools, but the depth and ease-of-use of Liquid Edition’s CX Color Correction tool deserves a serious look for professional editors.
