Big Machine Design (BMD), a full-service creative services studio based in Hollywood, has just completed a major redesigned show package for ABC News? ?20/20,? in conjunction with the new fall season of one of America?s most respected news magazine shows. The announcement was made by BMD co-founders Steve Petersen and Ken Carlson.
Working in tandem with Los Angeles-based David Berent, the executive producer who oversaw the assignment for ABC News, BMD created a dynamic look for the entire show, along with a next-generation implementation of ?20/20?s? look at every level, from editorial to the control room.
Now, everyone from editors to designers working at ?20/20? has access to the show?s new look, via After Effects toolkits that BMD created specifically for ABC. For the first time ever, ?20/20? now has the ability to plug video and text into a refined 3D environment, to create new graphics every week that are far beyond the native capabilities of an AVID or on-line suite.
For the assignment, BMD?s ?20/20? package included creating and producing a new show open, teasers, bumpers, and in-show graphics, as well as physical graphics presentations included within the actual ?20/20? stage set location. All of BMD?s graphics for the new package were created using Apple Power Mac G5 computers.
Regarding the new show package, Hal Aronow-Theil, Creative Director, ABC News, said, ?Big Machine Design fulfilled the creative brief on this project perfectly. They were very flexible to work with, and their final product speaks for itself. Their new graphics package is very elegant looking and clean, and the AfterEffects toolkit they provided to us is working out very nicely.?

Added Mr. Petersen and Mr. Carlson, ?We wanted the new ?20/20? show graphics to be fresh each week, and to look more complex than a simple matte and fill delivery from an online bay, so we decided to deliver the job as an After Effects Toolkit. It was a real challenge, making an ultra-simple After Effects interface that would be easily accessible to the editors at ABC, since they had never worked within the After Effects environment before. We created a simple drag and drop project that would require only a few basic steps to produce a complex and customized new look each week.?
BMD?s creative/production team for the ?20/20? project was: Creative Directors Steve Petersen and Ken Carlson; Designers / Animators, Ming Wang and Jake Portman; and Associate Producer Elaina Porter.
Hardware/software used by BMD for the project were Apple G5 Dual 2.5 Ghz machines, Cinema 4D, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Combustion, shot on the Sony HDCAM format.
