Capturing Video with After Effects 7.0 Quick Tip on how it works By Stephen Schleicher

For those who bought first day, Adobe After Effects 7.0 should now be in your hands.  One of the new features that has been added to the Adobe Production Suite Premium Bundle is the ability to psuedo-capture footage from After Effects with the help of the new Dynamic Link, and Premiere Pro.  This quick tip will show you how it is done.

Step 1:  Connect your DV deck to your system.  In this example, I?ll use my Sony DSR-11, connected to my HP Pavilion DV8000.

It doesn?t really matter if you have a composition open or not.  In fact, if you are capturing footage specifically to be modified, you may want to capture first, then create a composition from that.  If you are beginner to Adobe After Effects, I?ll show you how to do that in a moment.

Step 2:  Select File>Import>Capture in Adobe Premiere Pro.

Yes, that is Adobe?s answer to capturing footage with After Effects, using Dynamic Link with Premiere.  This means you need Adobe Premiere Pro ? so you might as well purchase the Production Studio Premium Bundle.  This also means everyone on a Mac is out of luck.  Maybe after this whole MacTel things emerges Adobe will jump back to the Mac full force with their entire Production line for the Apple set.

Step 3:  When Premiere Pro launches, select the appropriate Preset for your project, give the project a name, and click OK.  In this example, I am using DV NTSC Footage.

The nice thing about this set up, is the Production Studio Premium Bundle understands the task you are trying to accomplish, and opens up the capture window in Premiere Pro.

Step 4:  Set your In/Out points, and capture the clip.

When finished, close the Capture window.

As expected, the clip is in the Premiere Project Panel.  Unless you are planning on doing any editing to the captured clip, you can close the Premiere Pro project without saving.  In fact, you can find the Premiere Pro Project file on your hard drive and delete it completely if you like.  Make sure you don?t delete the media file as this is what you spent all this time (all of 20 seconds) capturing.

Step 5:  Close Adobe Premiere Pro, and return to Adobe After Effects 7.0.  Thanks to Dynamic Link, your clip is waiting for you in the Project Panel.

Step 6:  Now, for the new users, you can quickly create a New Composition that is exactly the same length and dimensions as the clip you just captured.

Select the clip in the Project Panel and drag it to the Create New Composition icon at the bottom of the panel.

Step 7:  With the composition created, and the clip in the Timeline, you are ready to make some magic.

Content Insider #148 - The iGen
NO...Doesn't have a thing to do with "that" smartphone...or "that" store...or "that" tablet. It's the next generation. Kids and we mean little kids. That's what today's products are being designed for/targeted at. You happen to buy one...fine. Watch a little, little kid pick up a smartphone. He/she just uses it. They've come pre-wired and we're still trying to figure out how to IM. It's the IGen. They want it instantly. They want to use it instantly. They expect their photos, their video, their music, their stuff immediately when/where/how they want it. Read More

Insider #149 - Game Demographics
The blood, gore, adrenalin challenges that were unveiled at E3 and enjoyed at ComicCon are fun to look at, easy to hold but are they really the games people want to plunk down their credit cards to own or rent time with? Seems as though the investors, the players who control the controllers have a different idea of a "good" game than the kids who develop them. While mobs of people play educational, informational, stimulating games our kid huddles in his room and mumbles "The Few, The Proud, The Gamers." Read More
